The merchandise in Once Consignment fills the 650-square-foot space formerly occupied by Sol Food Natural Market. It’s packed from wall to wall and floor to ceiling with furniture, clothes, art, kitchenware, records and CDs.
Baston, who studied fashion merchandising and marketing in college, remembered how much he used to enjoy wading through thrift stores back in his home state of Connecticut. He also says he used to hold “clothing swaps” where friends would bring bags of clothes to his house to exchange items.
Baston is also using extraordinarily tall walls to show and sell paintings and photos made by his artist friends.
“I’m able to be selective with what I take,” Baston says, adding that he wants to keep his prices as reasonable as possible. “I’m trying to keep everything down to a price point where people see it and instantly want to buy it.”
Once’s consignment contracts outlines a 50-50 split on sales of consigned merchandise. The contracts also provide a “renegotiation” if an item fails to sell within a certain time period.
